Meeting #1003, September 24, 2014
Grosvenor Toastmaster’s last meeting featured our annual Table Topics contest and Humorous Speech contest so it was fitting that Chairman and Toastmaster Jefferson Mesidor selected COMPETITION as the theme for the evening. Geoff Smith presided over the evening as Chief Judge.
First up was the Humorous Speech contest.
- The first contestant was Meaghan Johns who described the five stages of preparing for a Humorous Speech contest in “Humouritis,” which included depression, anger, acceptance and a few more to boot.
- The second contestant Nadine Ricketts provided tips to shop with a vengeance in “The ultimate sport.” Eat beforehand and have a game plan were just two of the useful pointers she shared with the audience.
- The third contestant Yassir Abdullah shared a harrowing but hilarious story of his adventure at the Syrian border in “Motor Crisis”.
- The fourth and final contestant Shirley Li described her dating nightmares in “One week of dating experience in Toronto”.
Congratulations to the winner Shirley Li and to runner up Yassir Abdullah.
Then it was on to the Table Topics contest, with the following contests having to describe shapes.
- Caroline Kiernan
- Janine Chin
- Yassir Abdullah
- Meaghan Johns
- Elizabeth Hibbert
- Devonnia Miller
Congratulations to Meaghan on her first place finish. Devonnia came second and Janine was third.
Shirley and Meaghan will represent Grosvenor Toastmaster at the Area 6 Contest, which will be held on Friday, October 17 at the North York Central Library (5120 Yonge St.). The event is free so we encourage everyone to attend and show their support for Shirley and Meaghan!
And a huge congratulations to all of our contestants for the evening, many of whom competed in their very first contest.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 8.
